 OUR APPROACH

Strategic, open, and always collaborative

Our strategic approach provides the answers and information we need and helps us create a foundation that informs any and all decisions we make for your brand. We never make decisions arbitrarily; everything we do is backed by reasoning and with your ideal client in mind.

As we work together you’ll find that we’re an open book—we are always here to answer questions and respond to feedback wholly and honestly.

We don’t sugar coat things and will do everything we can to ensure you understand the process from a designer’s perspective, giving additional context when you need it. Our calendar is always open for meetings to talk through any sticky points.

Our priority is to set the foundations of your brand. We know we’ve done our job when you feel confident that you know your business inside and out and are prepared for your next stage of growth.

 PROJECT PROCESS

Step-by-step guidance to lead you to the end result

Over the last 6 years our core growth efforts have been on creating an exceptional experience and process for you. We’ve thought through every step to ensure that we’re guiding you to the end result that will help you and your business most.

1. INQUIRY

Use the inquiry form at the bottom of the Services page to get in touch with us about your design and website needs. We’ll reply within 48-hours with a link to our calendar so you can choose a time and date for an inquiry call.

Inquiry calls typically take 10-30 minutes. They are an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for us to see how we can help you best. Once the call is over, we’ll send you a quote with the packages we discussed so you can review all the information, our contract, and the invoice before signing on.

2. ONBOARDING

Once you’ve accepted our quote, signed our contract and made the first project payment (which acts as a deposit to secure the project) we'll send you a kick-off email with access to your client portal and any homework we might have for you. As all projects start with strategy, we typically send a few questionnaires that help us get to know your business in more detail. We’ll also send you an estimated project timeline (that can be adjusted!) so you know when to expect presentations and meetings.

3. STRATEGY

With all questionnaires completed by you, we then meet via video chat to go over your strategy to ensure we are on the same page. We might have some additional questions to ask you too. In-person meetings are 60-90 minutes.

For brand identity projects, we send you a Brand Strategy document to review and provide feedback on. This document includes information on your business that we will have created using your answers to the initial questionnaires and what we discuss in our strategy meeting. Everything in that document will feel very familiar and through up to 3-rounds of refinements, we’ll work to tweak the language with you until you’re happy with the strategy for your brand and business.

A mood board is also sent for brand design projects to confirm the style direction of the identity design. This helps us to set the overall tone and vibe of the brand, and ensure that the vision we have in mind makes sense for you and your business.

4. DESIGN

For both brand and web design projects, we start the design phase once the strategy is completed and take 2-3 weeks for the initial design work. All design presentations will be sent to you through your client portal (via email) as a form - this allows you to provide feedback and ask questions, returning to the form whenever you need to. With your feedback, we then enter 1-3 rounds of refinements, tweaking the design to match what works best for your business.

Initial brand design presentations show the full brand concept (including logo design) with refinements being made to details. Additional options might be sent for icons, illustrations, or other design elements as needed but thanks to our strategy and mood board process the initial concept remains the same in 99% of our projects.

Web design presentations start with the homepage so we can set the overall design of the website first. Each section is broken down with a brief explanation and space for feedback, as well as a direct link to the website so it can be viewed as a whole while providing feedback.

Once confirmed, additional pages and details are designed with further forms sent for feedback. This process can be lengthy for websites as there are lots of details and moving parts, so 1 optional in-person meeting is included to go over the website as a whole. This makes sure you can see everything and have final say on all the colours, effects and details.

5. PROJECT HAND-OFF

Brand identity packages include brand guidelines, a style guide, links to download your fonts, logo files in both vector and raster and a logo information guide to help you understand the different file types.

Website packages include all content and graphics on the website. Ownership of the website is transferred to you separately. If you need help learning how to use and maintain your website a 90-minute training session can be purchased as an add-on.

Working with Salt FAQ

  • Send us an email at hello@saltdesignco.studio and we'll set up an inquiry call! All phone calls are booked through our online calendar so you can find the time and date that suits you best with no back and forth. We’ll call you at your chosen time, simple!

Once a project is in process, you can use the same link to book a call if you have any questions or want to run an idea by us. We’ll see the call booked in on our calendar and one of us will give you a call to chat.

  • Both of us are in every client project and at (almost) every client meeting. On some projects, one of us may take the lead or be more in communication with you, however, we both review and consult on the project throughout its duration to ensure a high standard of work and to catch any human errors. For brand projects in particular we are both very present.

As we are both designers we instead split our work by our strengths; Daphne is more analytical and leans towards a more neutral aesthetic while Lucy is a big picture thinker and favours a more feminine style.

Ultimately we do different things but we also do a lot of the same things, communicating as we go and leaning on our strengths so you get the best of us both.

  • Yes! While we love working locally and meeting our clients in person, we have also worked with clients in Toronto, South Carolina, Seattle, Victoria and Northern B.C.

For all of these projects, we operate 90% the same as our local projects - with all communication happening through email and our project management system. We will swap in-person meetings for video calls and will be available for more video chats should you need them.

  • All initial inquiries are best done over the phone unless you have a specific reason to meet in person (just let us know if you do!). We find that we can achieve everything we need in a 20-minute phone call, and from there can answer further questions over email or with an additional call.

As soon as you are signed on to work with us, we will set up an in-person or Zoom meeting to get to know you and your business better!

  • The timeline for our Brand and Web Design process has been crafted intentionally. It is a fair timeline that allows ample room for us to deliver our best work to you and for you to give us thoughtful feedback on the work we've provided.

Should you have a tight timeline, however, we'll try our best to adhere to any due dates you may have. We may have to decline your project, should we feel that it is not realistic or in certain cases, include a rush fee if the turnaround is tight but doable.

We recommend reaching out to us at least 5 months in advance of your due date.

  • No, we aren’t! Salt Design Co. is literally just the two of us, Lucy and Daphne, and our amazing admin assistant, Carina.

We consider ourselves more as entrepreneurs, working as a small business. This means that there are lots of things larger agencies do that aren’t necessarily part of our services.

If we decide to work together, we approach it like a collaboration! We become members of the same side—working together to create a memorable brand and website that will help you grow your business.

  • We consider websites to be your virtual storefront. It's *the* place you are able to showcase who you are to your clients and customers. Without a brand, we are not able to effectively do this for you!

All of our web designs are based on the needs of your business and built off an established strategy. This way, we can be really sure that we have met your business needs (and goals!) and that the website will function the way it needs to while also ensuring your brand values and personality are clear.

We do not want to arbitrarily choose fonts and colours for your business. We've tried this in the past and trust us, the website is never as good as it could be.

  • A logo is only one part of a brand identity. Even if you have a brand strategy already completed, your brand is not complete with just a logo. What fonts and colours will you be using? How will you be using them? What about patterns, illustrations or other brand details? These are all things we take into consideration when creating a brand. Together these items visually represent a business–something a logo just cannot do on its own.

Beyond that though, a brand really is more than choosing some fonts and colours–it’s *how* those things are used and what the overall tone, mood and voice of the brand are A brand encompasses the personality of the business and ensures that all touchpoints with a customer or client are consistent both visually and in tone.

When creating a brand we consider the language, values, messaging and personality of the brand to ensure that the visuals match and guide you in communicating what matters to your people.

TL;DR A logo is part of your brand and incomplete on its own. We only design full brand identities.

  • Yep! While we specialize in small business branding and web design, we are available for other design needs. If you want to add marketing materials or packaging onto a brand or website project, let us know!

  • Yes! Once our project is completed, we offer hourly maintenance packages so you can always have us on hand for website updates. You can also hire us for your marketing design needs, packaging, social media graphics and more!

We are always available for questions or further design support too. We’re happy to point you in the direction of other resources you might need and will most likely continue to champion you online too!

Even if we’re done working together, we consider you part of the Salt Family; we’ll often look for ways we can support you - either by promoting you on our Instagram, inviting you to our events, asking you to speak on our podcast or connecting you with other clients who you could collaborate with.

We love the people we are lucky enough to work with and consider many of our clients as friends - and that doesn’t end when a project does!
